This year Yours Clothing is partnering with Alzheimer’s Society to help towards the fight against Dementia. Ever wondered where your 5p carrier bag donation goes to? Well, 100% of the proceeds of the carrier bags you purchase at your local Yours Clothing store go to Alzheimer’s Society.
Annually at Yours Clothing we ask our store staff to vote for the charity that they feel our customers will relate most to. This year, our store staff voted unanimously for Alzheimer’s society and felt this particular charity would be closest to the hearts of Yours Clothing customers.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a physical disease which effects the brain. It is irreversible and progressive and it slowly destroys your thinking skills and your memory. Over time it also destroys your ability to do the simplest of tasks.
What are the differences between dementia and Alzheimer’s?
When someone is diagnosed with dementia they are diagnosed with several symptoms. This is similar to someone who has a cough, they do have a cough but there may be a wide range of different causes to their cough. Just like when someone is diagnosed with dementia they may have a variety of different symptoms, but without knowing what is the main cause. Another difference between them both is that Alzheimer’s is an irreversible disease whereas some forms of dementia, such as a drug interaction or a vitamin deficiency, may actually be temporary or reversible.
What are the dementia symptoms?
There are very common symptoms of dementia but as every single person is unique, these symptoms can differ.
Memory loss can effect simple tasks you do daily such as:
- Losing items (keys, purse, etc) around the house
- Struggling to remember people’s names or putting the right word into a sentence
- Forgetting recent events or conversations
- Not being able to remember your way home
- Forgetting different appointments or special dates
The above are early symptoms of the disease but these can progress onto problems with thinking, communication or reasoning. These could include:
- Speech or language – struggling to put a sentence together or repeating certain things
- Visual – finding it difficult to judge distances or seeing different objects in three dimensions. This can make it trickier to do things such as park a car or navigating stairs
- Organising and concentrating – It may be harder to make decisions or solve problems
- Orientation – losing track of what date it is or of the time
Is dementia Hereditary?
Most of dementia is not inherited but this depends on the cause. Very rare forms of dementia are inherited such as Huntington’s disease which requires one faulty copy of the gene to be able to inherit the disease.
Is Alzheimer’s disease Hereditary?
In the majority of Alzheimer’s cases the disease is not hereditary. But like many conditions having someone in the family who does suffer with Alzheimer’s this can minimally increase the chances of members of the family getting the disease in years to come.
What types of dementia are there?
There are several types of dementia, these include:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Vascular dementia
- Dementia with Lewy bodies
- Frontotemporal dementia
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
- Young on-set dementia
- Alcohol-related brain damage (including Korsakoff’s syndrome)
- HIV-related cognitive impairment
- Mild cognitive impairment (MCI)

As well as this, Yours Clothing have created a Christmas t-shirt in theme with Alzheimer’s society’s Elf Day, 10% of all sales of this t-shirt will be donated to Alzheimer’s Society & Alzheimer Scotland and as a result of this we anticipate an extra £4,000 will be donated!
